April 1st comes and goes. The jokes stop. The fake headlines disappear. Everything goes back to normal.
But scammers?
They don’t stop.
In fact, this time of year is when they get busier.
Not because your team is careless.
But because everyone’s moving fast, juggling a lot, and just trying to get through the day.
And that’s when something small… something that looks normal… slips through.
I want to walk you through three scams I’m seeing right now. These aren’t hitting “gullible” people. They’re hitting smart, capable employees who are just busy.
As you read, ask yourself one simple question:
Would my team catch this… or click it?
Scam #1: The “Quick Payment” Text
It looks like this:
“You have an unpaid toll of $6.99. Pay now to avoid late fees.”
That’s it. Nothing dramatic. No red flags.
It even uses real names—E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak—whatever fits your area.
And honestly?
$6.99 doesn’t feel like a risk. So someone clicks, pays, and moves on.
Except… it wasn’t real.
This scam has exploded. Tens of thousands of complaints. Fake websites built just to mimic toll systems.
And here’s why it works:
It feels normal. Like something you’d handle in 10 seconds between meetings.
What actually helps:
I always say this like it’s a house rule:
👉 We don’t make payments through text links. Ever.
If something might be real, go straight to the official site yourself. Don’t click. Don’t reply. Not even “STOP.”
Because replying tells them, “Hey, this number works.”
Convenience is how they get in.
Process is how you shut them out.
Scam #2: “Your File Is Ready”
This one blends right into your workday.
You get an email:
“A document has been shared with you.”
It looks like Google Drive. Or OneDrive. Or DocuSign.
Everything feels right—the logo, the layout, even the sender name.
So you click.
It asks you to log in.
You type your password.
And just like that… someone else has it too.
Now they’re inside your systems.
Here’s the scary part:
Sometimes these emails are coming from real platforms. Attackers use compromised accounts to send them, so they pass right through spam filters.
No warning. No red flag.
What actually helps:
This one’s simple, but powerful:
👉 If you weren’t expecting the file, don’t click the link.
Instead, open your browser and go straight to the platform. Log in there.
If the file is real, it’ll be waiting for you.
It’s a small habit.
But it closes a very big door.
Scam #3: The Email That Sounds… Perfect
Remember when scam emails were obvious?
Bad grammar. Weird wording. Easy to spot.
Those days are gone.
Now they sound polished. Calm. Professional.
Honestly?
Sometimes they sound better than real emails.
That’s because many of them are written with AI. And they work—way more than the old ones ever did.
They reference real names. Real roles. Real situations.
Your finance person gets a vendor update.
Your HR team gets an employee request.
Nothing feels off.
That’s what makes it dangerous.
What actually helps:
I like to keep this one really grounded:
👉 If it involves money, passwords, or sensitive info—pause and double-check.
Pick up the phone. Send a quick message. Walk down the hall.
And one more thing…
👉 If it feels urgent, treat that as the warning sign.
Real security doesn’t rush you.
What This All Comes Down To
None of these scams rely on someone being careless.
They rely on something much more human:
- Familiarity
- Timing
- Trust
- And the feeling of “this will only take a second”
That’s why this isn’t really a people problem.
It’s a process problem.
If one rushed click can cause real damage, the system needs support—not blame.
And the good news?
Process problems are fixable.
Where I Can Help
I talk to business owners every day who feel this quiet stress in the background.
Not panic. Just…
“That feeling that something might slip through.”
You don’t want another project.
You don’t want a tech lecture.
You just want to know:
👉 Are we okay?
If that question has crossed your mind even once, let’s have a simple conversation.
No pressure. No scare tactics.
Just a real talk about:
- What businesses like yours are actually facing right now
- Where things tend to slip through the cracks
- And how to fix it without slowing your team down
If nothing else, you’ll walk away with clarity.
And sometimes, that alone is worth everything.
